Prepping Car For Vinyl Wrap

So right now behind me we have this BMW 235i. We're about to wrap it in 3M Cosmic Blue. The condition of the paint work is not the best. There are some imperfections in the front bumper and it is heavily contaminated. The customer's totally cool with it. It's gonna be a big turnaround on this car. So we're gonna go ahead and start the prep process now. Right now we are prepping the vehicle. We just did a rinseless wash and we're about to do a clay bar treatment. This paint is heavily contaminated, so we're gonna go ahead and do a nice clay bar and then also agitate under the hood, by the side of my fender, just so that everything lays down very well and we don't have any problems of the film peeling back or anything. And that way the wrap will be nice and clean and last a very long time. It doesn’t need any kind of paint correction since the that doesn’t impact how the film actually lays down. If this was something like PPF (paint protection film) or a ceramic coating, then it would need to be polished.

Obviously because the paint is in pretty bad condition, the prep work is going be very important to make sure once we're actually wrapping it, it's being wrapped on the paint and debris or anything else is not interfering between the wrap and the paint itself. So almost done here.

And something I forgot to mention is a step before the clay bar process is the iron remover. That's when you spray the vehicle, it makes contact with the iron fallout, it turns purple and then you rinse it off.

As you can see, the vehicle is heavily contaminated. There's a lot of overspray. This is why the clay bar is really important just to make sure that the paint is in the best condition possible and so that no debris is visible through the vinyl. Right now we removed all of the emblems on the vehicle. There's a little bit of adhesive leftover, but we'll go ahead and take care of that tomorrow. All that's left is going be the mirrors and the door handles and the front bumper. That's all that we need to disassemble in order to get a really clean install

Wrapping The Car

Let's see right here, right here's where I stop, that's where the headlight's going to continue. So what I'm gonna do is I'm actually going to take my knife, get right here, right, right on the headlight. What that's going to allow me to do is pick up that right now since I cut that, I can bring that into my fender right there. You know what I'm saying? It's crazy how that little slit allowed me to do all that.

And we try our best to talk on camera, but what happens is we have other details going on as well. I think we had a paint correction and ceramic coating and an interior detail going on. So once the video gets going, we start working, we just work. It's kind of hard to really talk to the camera and run all the details and just do everything else we're doing on a day-to-day basis. So we'll get better over time to actually talk and let you guys know what's happening and the troubles we're going through or any tips that we have along the way. But right now we just work.

Right now we are wrapping up the BMW. It's basically fully wrapped now. We have a couple pieces left, like the like the top windshield piece and then like the back trunk area. But other than that, the whole car is reassembled. We're going to go ahead and lower it, give it a wipe down, apply the ceramic coating to it, and the the BMW will be all done.

Now we're applying a ceramic coating. This is Gtechniq Halo. This is going to keep the vinyl from fading or yellowing while making it last longer. It'll also make it easier to wash and it's going to make it look amazing.

So that's going to wrap it up for this vehicle. The BMW is fully wrapped in 3M Cosmic Blue. We went ahead and added the nice little BMW colors right here in the front grille just as a nice little touch for him. The color change took about four to five days. I think the trickiest part was probably the front bumper. There's about eight inlays on that front bumper in order to make that one happen. But other than that, everything looks great. We're all post heated and it looks good.
